Allen Raine Centenary
Allen Raine Celebration / Festival 2008

Allen Raine (1836-1908), born Anne Adaliza Evans in Newcastle Emlyn became a prolific writer when her husband Beynon Puddicombe took early retirement due to ill health and the couple settled in Tresaith on the Cardiganshire (now Ceredigion) coast.
She became one of the most popular authors of the turn of the 19th century, selling over a million copies of her books in Britain alone. Her first book was published when she was 60. She died at the age of 71 having written nine novels. Some of these novels were turned into silent films.

Principal Aims of the Celebration / Festival:
- To use the centenary of her death as an occasion to celebrate her life and works, stimulating interest in Newcastle Emlyn and its cultural heritage.
- To draw attention to her achievements by publicising her story, writings and the films based on her books in an informative and accessible way.
- To make the celebration as creative and inclusive as possible for the town by organising events, which will involve active participation by a range of people and groups.
- To run these events in order to raise funds for:
a) Allen Raine plaque on Bank House
b) Maintenance of her grave at Penbryn
c) The creation of an Allen Raine scholarship or prize for an annual short story/ literary competition -details tba.
