Emlyn Parent Named Mum of the Year

Fiona White
A mother from Newcastle Emlyn has been named Wales ’ ‘Mum of the Year’ following a nationwide survey by parenting website Netmums.
Fiona White was nominated for raising more than £100,000 to renovate a local children’s park.
Mum of the Year nominations were made as part of a survey to find out how much of their free time mums give up to help others.
Mum of the Year was set up by Netmums and siblu holidays in October 2008 to recognise the extra work undertaken by mums to support other in their community. A panel of judges chose regional winners in January 2009. Regional Mums of the Year will go forward to a national vote, to find the UK ’s Mum of the Year in February 2009.
The survey, run by Netmums and family holiday specialist siblu, reveals that on average mums spend almost 17 hours every month supporting friends, family and their community including helping in schools (67%), helping the elderly (27%), running local baby, toddler and church groups (30%) or fundraising (46%).
Fiona was chosen as Mum of the Year for Wales by a panel of judges who praised her staggering achievements, and for being determined to grapple with life’s challenges and make a difference to the community.
Fiona gave up her own time to organise a series of fundraising efforts to raise money for the park in Newcastle Emlyn, and her persistence and perspiration ensured that money kept flooding in.
Siobhan Freegard, founder of Netmums says: “Fiona epitomises the spirit of modern mums who are the hidden foundations of our lives, doing hours of unpaid work to help family, friends and local groups.
“Many mums are the driving force behind activities and groups that are appreciated by their entire community. It is this sprit of support that our Mum of the Year award is celebrating.”
As Mum of the Year for Wales , Fiona wins a seven-night family holiday to France from siblu, sponsors of Mum of the Year. Fiona is also shortlisted for the national Mum of the Year award, which will be decided by a nationwide vote.
