Supermarket Action
Newcastle Emlyn’s Supermarket Sweep!
http://groups.google.com/group/nceactiongroup

“We actually come from south Carmarthenshire to spend time in NCE because it’s a proper town – not a clonesville. Bliss! No major supermarket or McD’s in sight. NCE and Narbeth should have some kind of conservation status, including state financial aid, to retain their current character. Cardigan, Carmarthen and Haverfordwest have all withered on the vine, having once been great places to visit and shop. Please don’t let NCE go the same way.”
Comment from Town Visitor
Two separate land owners in Newcastle Emlyn have applied for planning permission to build supermarkets. Both sites are currently occupied by car sales businesses. Both applications are now before Carmarthenshire County Council.
Site 1: Plan is to demolish Cawdor Cars showroom on Tanyard Lane, its forecourt adjoining the Cawdor car park, a bungalow and a former car parts shop. No specific supermarket is named for the 11,000 square foot shop (two and a half times as large as the CK supermarket).

Site 2: Plan is for a Lidl Supermarket on the Castle Motors site opposite the existing CK’s supermarket.

Newcastle Emlyn is a traditional Welsh market-town which is flourishing despite the country’s economic problems. The main street is full of small independent shops, and you can buy just about everything locally. Our town is a rare thing nowadays since so many small towns have been destroyed by the big supermarket chains.
There are not many small towns in Britain which can boast two butchers, a baker, a fishmonger, a delicatessen, a local food shop, two pharmacies and much more! So do we need a large supermarket on the Cawdor Cars site in the middle of the town?
