Newcastle Emlyn playground used to launch 2009 Big Lottery Fund/People’s Millions on ITV
Local children have featured on TV again, as last year’s Big Lottery Fund success for the King George V Playing Field Association was used to launch the 2009 People’s Millions competition.
The Big Lottery Fund/People’s Millions organisers said they were bowled over by how quickly the Newcastle Emlyn playground committee has implemented its plans. Helped by the recent good weather, the new playground is expected to be complete on time, by the beginning of April, in plenty of time for the Easter holidays, to the delight of the whole community.
The new facilities, financed by almost £104,000 of new funding secured last year (including the £50,000 Big Lottery People’s Millions prize, and the £10,000 Goodyear prize spent last year), include a huge multi-dimensional climbing structure, tyre swings, zip-wire, basket-ball hoop and sports wall, a fully-enclosed toddler area, and a dry walk-way running between the two main gates onto the playing field. A teen shelter and new picnic area are also being installed.
“We were delighted to be able to help launch People’s Millions for 2009 with ITV and the Big Lottery Fund, and hope that other community projects will feel inspired to apply for this funding after seeing what a difference it can make,” said Mrs Fiona White, one of the main forces behind the new playground.
“Fund-raising for the new playground will continue during 2009 and beyond, so that the committee can add to the installation with more new equipment. “Although £104,000 sounds like a lot of money, playground equipment is very expensive, so there’s only so far it will stretch,” explained Mrs White. “We’ve started by providing something for everyone, and will continue to gather feedback and raise more funds, so that we can keep building on this fantastic new community facility.”
